Optimized Industrial Extraction Chilling

May 26, 2020 – Scott Timms

Whether your extraction process is using pure ethanol or CO2 with a winterization step, a low temperature chilling solution is needed. As ethanol extraction processes get larger and larger, the corresponding chiller load also increases. Unfortunately, compared to traditional refrigeration, it also takes more power to remove heat when operating at very low temperatures. Thus, single-stage cooling systems are quite inefficient at -40°F and require relatively large compressors to achieve relatively small duties.

At G&D Chillers, we use a tiered approach to the chilling process which brings about major capital and operational cost savings. An efficient high temp chiller handles as much of the load as possible to minimize the size, cost and power consumption of the low temp chiller that is also needed. For instance, many extraction processes use some form of distillation to reclaim solvent. Because the latent heat of condensation is a large load in these systems and takes place at a high temperature (typically 140°F – 175°F), an efficient refrigeration cycle can be used for the condensation load.

Next, a smaller low temp cycle can be used to bring the solvent down to its -40°F target temperature. Based on the size of the project, G&D Chillers has been able to identify several critical points to break down the chiller set temperature and minimize compressor horsepower requirements. This will cost you and your clients less on the front end and save you money every day while optimizing large scale production.
